I have never been a fan of countdowns. My personality tends to be oft-nervous and worrisome, and when there’s a clock counting down the minutes, hours or even days until some planned event, I tend to become overly concerned about being prepared in time.

So one can only imagine my first thoughts when Ron Obernier, the team leader for my Rotary International-sponsored trip to England in October, started including the number of days until departure at the bottom for his emails. For the past several months, I’ve tried to avoid even scrolling that far down in my browser window.

But now, with less than two weeks until we fly out of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, it’s kind of hard to ignore.

Traveling from East Anglia in the United Kingdom, an inbound team of young professionals didn’t know quite what to expect upon arriving in Southern Illinois.

They certainly didn’t anticipate being vaulted into a weather cycle of more than a foot of rain, high winds and multiple tornado warnings.

Checking Facebook one day, I found a message from a friend in Carbondale – one simple line of text.

“How would you like to go to England in October?” My instant reply was just as simple: “What’s the catch?”

Inquiring more led to Rotary International’s Group Study Exchange, a program designed at granting young professionals an opportunity to learn about their chosen vocation in another country.
